Violence Against Women

On December 6th we will remember the massacre of 14 women at Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. They were murdered in 1989 when a male classmate shot and killed them all for simply being women.

We will be collecting donations in the cafeteria for the ribbons, the money will be going towards the Windsor Hiatus House which supports female victims of domestic violence.

World Kindness Day!

Sandwich Secondary will be celebrating World Kindness Day on Wednesday November 10th, 2010.

World Kindness Day is celebrated on November 13th of each year and was first introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Organization. It is a day that encourages individuals to overlook boundaries, race and religion while focusing on the commonalities we share with one another so as to one day achieve peaceful coexistence.

To encourage kindness in our school, SGA members will be giving out Random Acts of Kindness cards to all students during period one on Wednesday.  These cards are meant to encourage individuals to perform a simple act of kindness for someone they know or perhaps don’t know and hand the card over to that person inspiring him/her to do the same. The goal is to have the cards circulate numerous times throughout the day as students and staff perform random acts of kindness! (Think of the movie, Pay it Forward).

Please encourage everyone you know to participate in Random Acts of Kindness!!

Simple Ideas for Random Acts of Kindness:
Buy someone a coffee or a donut
Hold the door open for someone carrying a heavy load
Give someone a compliment
Let someone ahead of you in the cafeteria line
Hug a friend
Say hi to someone you don’t know; make a new friend
Buy lunch for a friend
Help someone with their homework
Write a note to a friend, colleague or teacher letting them know how much you mean to them
Bring treats to give away to classmates
Give someone a flower
Lend someone a pen/pencil
Help a teacher clean up the classroom
Do something nice for your bus driver

Do something kind that someone will not expect!!!

Last but not least, try to keep the Random Acts of Kindness going after school and do something nice for your parents, neighbours, and friends!

Wear Purple on Wed. Oct. 20th!

Tomorrow people from around the world will be wearing purple to honor six teens who recently committed suicide as well as many other LGBT youth who have suffered from homophobic bullying.

A Facebook Event Page has been set up for those that will be participating in Spirit Day by wearing purple. This is the information posted on the page:

JESSICA YEE

 KEYNOTE ADDRESS:

Can We Talk? Sex Ed for the 21st Century: A Young Feminist’s Perspective

Jessica Yee describes herself as a “multiracial Indigenous hip-hop feminist reproductive justice freedom fighter.” The 25 year-old activist has been working with women’s organizations for half of her life, and is internationally recognized as a leader on cultural competency, anti-racism initiatives, and sexual health.

Yee finds inspiration in the everyday activists she meets. She notes that you don’t have to be at a rally with a picket sign to be an activist; rather, she learns from “activists at home.” “If they’re in their home community where they’re dealing with the most horrendous realities, and living with the effects of colonialism for example, in every sense of the word, their activism is just by living, just by surviving,” she says. “That gives me a lot of fire.”

SGA t-shirts

We have been working on a t-shirt design for our club this month and would like some feedback on our designs. We started with school colours (navy & orange), the paw print design (for Sabres of course!), and we added 3 icons (peace. hope, and love) as well as a map of the world.  On the back we want to put our name (Sabres for Global Awareness) as well as a thought-provoking quote that summarizes our beliefs as a group.

Here are a few of the quotes that we are considering:

You must be the change you wish to see in the world.
Mahatma Ghandi

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
Martin Luther King Jr.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Margaret Mead

SGA t-shirt: Peace, Love, Hope

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

International Day of Peace – September 21st

The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations and nations to create practical acts of peace on a shared date. It was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981 to coincide with the opening of the General Assembly. The first Peace Day was celebrated in September 1982.

International Day of Peace is also a Day of Ceasefire – personal or political. Take this opportunity to make peace in your own relationships as well as impact the larger conflicts of our time. Imagine what a whole Day of Ceasefire would mean to humankind.
